A REGIONAL SITE, CHECK IT OUT!
We are so excited that NEW YORK CITY has a NEW, PERMANENT ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND
It is called Play:Ground and it looks fabulous. They run camps all summer, and have got quite a bit of great national press since they opened this spring. Though we haven't been down yet for a visit, we like it because they are old school in their structure, there are two playgrounds, one for younger kids and their parents, and one for slightly older kids in which no parents are actually allowed.
WHAT ABOUT OUR LOCAL PERMANENT SITE?
We still need your help!
We are searching for the right interdisciplinary collaborators who would like to plunge with The Play Workshop into making this happen in our community. These could either be organizations or individuals. The second is to find an anchor site partner who understands and believes in what we are trying to do and who has an appropriate site available.
Imagine a local site where kids can create a deep sense of place, create, explore, get messy, take healthy risks, build, (not only with cardboard boxes, but with hammers and saws) and connect . It could look similar to the new Play:Ground on Governers Island in NYC, like Berkeley Adventure Playground which has been going for 36 years now, or Ithaca, NY's Hands on Nature Anarchy Zone.
It will certainly look mostly like itself, like our communities version of what child-directed adventure play can look like.
Please contact us with your ideas, contacts, energy or money to help enact this vision. :)
